First posted June 8, 2023 For additional information, contact: Director, Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center777 NW 9th Street Suite 400Corvallis, OR 97330 Captive breeding release programs have been instrumental in preventing the extinction of some wildlife species, but these less successful for other species. Evaluating initial guidelines procedures to start a captive program particular species is an important first step process initiating such program. The Mohave ground squirrel (Xerospermophilus mohavensis) diurnal sciurid endemic Mojave Desert southern California. Ongoing drought conditions California, impacts climate change, reliance squirrels on sufficient precipitation reproduction appear resulted recent extirpations from part its restricted range. Thus, designing has identified as top priority this purpose report review document scientific literature release, wild-to-wild translocation, related well non-sciurid rodent This because never attempted squirrels, so models similar can provide good metrics guidance development. We then use identify key questions that underpin effective design or squirrels.

Husbandry and diseases of captive wild swine and peccaries.
Wild swine and peccaries are popular exhibit animals throughout the world, but the anatomy and behaviour of these species make it difficult to construct housing and enclosures which are suitable from an aesthetic and sanitation standpoint. African wild suids may serve as reservoir hosts for African swine fever. Likewise, African suids are susceptible to most of the viral, bacterial and parasiti...
متن کاملCaptive Breeding and Gene Banks
Today, our planet is in a state of crisis and many of its natural resources have been destroyed by human activities. One of the principle aims of conservation biology is to promote concrete management programs to limit any further increase in the number of extinct and threatened species and ecosystems. Different approaches may be followed to maintain the world’s biodiversity: the in situ approa...

The Seychelles Giant Tortoise Conservation Project captive breeding programme for the Seychelles tortoises Dipsochelys arnoldi and D. hololissa is described. Successful hatching occurred in 2002 and the reasons for this success discussed. Important factors are enclosure design, social structure and the use of artificial incubation. Methods for sexing hatchlings are discussed. There may be great...
متن کاملCaptive breeding and the reintroduction of Mexican and red wolves.
Mexican and red wolves were both faced with extinction in the wild until captive populations were established more than two decades ago. These captive populations have been successfully managed genetically to minimize mean kinship and retain genetic variation. Descendants of these animals were subsequently used to start reintroduced populations, which now number about 40-50 Mexican wolves in Ar...
